Juan Li
Juan Li was born in 1946 in Havana, Cuba. He began his
Taoist studies in 1965 with a comparative study of the Tho Te Ching
in English translations. He went on to major in Chinese studies at Brooklyn
College, where he specialized in Chinese history of the Shang and Chou
dynasties. At this time he also began a special research and study project
on the I Ching, a subject with which he is sfill deeply involved.
During an eight years residence in Nepal and Inida he was introduced
to the yoga practices by a variety of Indian and Tibetan teachers. During
annual treks in the Himalayas Tibetan practioners introduced him to
the power walk and the importance of pilgrimage practice in spiritual
evolution.
His first Tai Chi training took place in San Francisco with Sifu Sik
Ho Chu, who introduced him to the Fu style of Tai Chi, a form developed
in Honan province during the 19th century by Fu Juen Ko. Fu style is
characterized by the use of extremely graceful hand movements and low
stances for greater power. After teaching Fu style, Sifu Sik Ho Chu
introduced Juan Li to Wu style Tai Chi and the Liang Yee form of Kung
Fu.
In 1982 Juan Li met Master Mantak Chia for the first time, and began
his study of the traditional Taoist internal energy formulas. Soon after
their meeting, Juan Li began helping with the illustrations of Master
Chia's books. Master Chia also introduced him to the 13 movement form
of Yang style and the Wu style broad sword form.
Eventually Juan Li went on to become a senior instructor in the Healing
Tao System, and today he spends the greater part of his time presenting
these teachings in Western Europe.
